Autistic adults have certain limitations when it comes to
realising their career goals. Even people with high functioning autism have
difficulty finding the right kind of jobs, and even if they do find one, they
often are not able to keep their jobs due to lack of social and other basic
skills that are often expected in a job environment.
In such scenarios there is a need to research and identify
areas or careers that autistic adults can take up, and also keep them on a long
term basis, and at the same time build job satisfaction and a sense of inclusion
in society.
A lot of the jobs in today’s industries involve routine
tasks, and are repetitive in nature. Most of these jobs require very little
communication and are well paying. Some of them include certain manufacturing
production line jobs, data entry, transcription and other BPO jobs that require
similar skills. Software programming and testing is also a great option.
Identifying these jobs, and being able to adjust the expectations from the job
requirements , and matching them to the core skills of an autistic adult is
part of the solution.
Below are a list of organisations which have been able to
successfully employ autistic adults in their workforce. Most of them have been
able to do so by employing mostly autistic adults in the workforce. This is one
way, the other way is to integrate such adults in an organisation which is
dominated by regular adults, who most probably work differently than their
autistic counterparts. This can sometimes become a challenge, and the need here
is to identify solutions to handle such challenges in a constructive manner.
